Customer Owned Piping

Some of our customers have a natural gas service line behind or on the downstream side of their meter. These lines are known as "Customer Owned" service lines. WTPUD owns and maintains the service line from the main to the meter; however, any piping behind the meter, whether above ground or buried, is the sole responsibility of the home or business owner. Customers with shop buildings, pool heaters, etc. are typically the ones who fall into this category.

If you have a buried, customer-owned service line, please understand the following:

  1. WTPUD does not maintain the customer's buried piping.
  2. If the customer's buried piping is not maintained, it may be subject to the potential hazards of corrosion and leakage.
  3. Buried gas piping should be:
    • Periodically inspected for leaks
    • Periodically inspected for corrosion if the piping is metallic
    • Repaired if any unsafe condition is discovered

Doing Some Digging Yourself?

  • If you plan to dig on your property, Tennessee 811 should be called three days in advance so that all underground utility piping, wires, and cables can be marked.
  • Digging in marked areas should be performed cautiously, using only hand tools.
  • WTPUD recommends that customers contact plumbing or heating contractors to assist in locating, inspecting, and repairing the customer's buried piping.
