Piping System Installations

We have recognized that there is a need for gas piping in our coverage area. We exist to serve our customers and so, to do that effectively, the West Tennessee Public Utility District has decided to install piping systems beyond the meter to all natural gas appliances inside your home. There will be an hourly rate of $75 plus the expense of parts and materials used.  Prior to our arrival, we kindly ask that:

  • Appliances be assembled and in place.

  • Any vented-type appliances be vented.

If you currently have propane appliances and wish to have them converted, we can help. Please give us a call so that we can come out and discuss what your needs are.

Natural Gas requires black iron piping from appliance to meter.

Residential Gas Piping Guidelines

  • All piping that penetrates a masonry wall must be sleeved with a non-corrosive material, such as PVC pipe.
  • Piping on the exterior must be secured in place by a non-corrosive material, such as conduit strap.
  • WTPUD requires that all piping leaving the meter must be at least 1" in diameter to supply an adequate amount of gas.
  • WTPUD requires a pressure test (air only) on all piping under or inside a residence or building. Pressure test must hold 30PSIG for 4 hours. A written statement must be given by the performer. Piping outdoors does not require a pressure test but must be checked by using soapy water for leaks before service is turned on.
  • All appliances must be installed under the manufacturer instructions with black iron piping and requires a shutoff within arm's reach of the appliances, such as water heaters, central units, space heaters, and ventless appliances. Cooktop stoves and clothes dryers are an exception to this. They may be installed using a flexible range connector which must be an AGA-approved Flex Hose and must have a shut off.
  • Access must be given in order to check for leaks. All joints must be accessible for initial inspection.
  • WTPUD requires a sediment trap at the meter.
